HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has announced a new disclosure campaign targeting tradesmen, it has been claimed.
HMRC has launched 16 criminal cases, and 100’s of civil cases, against tradesmen following a series of targeted amnesties and investigations.
It aims to build on its plumber’s campaign to give an opportunity to another group of tradesmen to declare unpaid tax.
The plumbers’ campaign was launched in April, which urged plumbers to pay the tax they owe or face fines of up to 20% of that outstanding. HMRC said it would soon announce whether the plumbers’ tax amnesty will result in criminal prosecutions.
HMRC’s director of risk and intelligence, Mike Wells has advised most tradesmen to be open about their areas of interest for the coming year, hoping to maximise the exchange of information. It is hoped that this will reduce the tax gap and help customers pay the amount they owe.
Mr Wells said:
“We will use the information we gather to pursue people who choose not to use the opportunities we provide for them to put their affairs in order on the best possible terms. It will be more expensive if we come and find people, so I urge them to come forward and disclose voluntarily.”
HMRC has already raised more than £500 million from voluntary disclosures and £100 million from follow-up activity.
The whole campaign is now aimed at private tutors, e-market businesses as well as tradesmen.
