Not everyone agrees with new alcohol ID law

MISHAWAKA — A change is coming to the way liquor stores sell booze.  The law that mandates everyone be carded to buy carry-out alcohol, is being tossed out.  Starting Friday, only people who look 40 and younger will have to show ID.

“There aren’t too may 20-year-olds who look 40, so I think the new law is good,” Kevin Young said as he bought some beer at City Wide Liquors on Grape Road.

The law that made liquor stores card everyone regardless of age only lasted one year but not everyone agrees that it should change.

“The law was passed unluckily, but that unluckiness turned into a good thing,” Owner of City Wide Liquors, Daniel Rousseve said.

Rousseve said he wasn’t excited about the mandatory ID law when it started last year.  But once it was enforced, he said it made his job easier by taking the guess work out of the hands of his clerks and making it nearly impossible to sell to minors.

“I think they had success with it. So why change it?,” He said, “I think they should keep mandatory carding.”

Rousseve says City Wide Liquors will continue to card everyone who comes into the store.
